Autobiography of Sherrie Poe

Sherrie Poe Sherrie Poe was born in Gladewater, Texas on April 8,1963. She lived in Longview and attended Springhill High School. In her senior year, she went to work for JC Penneys part-time. Little did she know that God was about to introduce her to the Truth through the customers that she would meet on this job.

There was a family that came in quite frequently and Sherrie noticed that this particular mother and her two daughters had a different spirit and way of dress than the other customers. What was it that made them stand out from the others?

Around this same time, Sherrie stopped one day to use a pay phone. Tucked in the phone booth was a tract from a Pentecostal Church. She was drawn to this little piece of paper, which she still has to this day. This tract started a wonderful change in her life. The tract gave scriptures about Oneness and the Holy Ghost, which she would later read again from a Bible she received at the age of 7 from her parents.

This tract and reading the scriptures it listed started a hunger for more of God and his plan of salvation. Sherrie started to attend Kilgore College and she enrolled in an English class of “Grammar and Composition”. The first assignment given was to write a research paper on anything of interest to you. She knew immediately, in class that day, what her topic would be, this religion called “Pentecost”! She armed herself with all she could find on the subject. Her sources included the Bible, her tract and a book written by Frank Bartleman, “Azuza Street”. The paper was written and she received an A for her grade. More than that, she now had a greater desire to experience Acts 2:38.

That experience came on November 1, 1987 while attending a revival service at the church of Pastor A.D. Spears. Bro. Jerome Bourn, from Houston, Texas was preaching this revival. This is the night that changed her life. Little did she know that she would marry Gordon Poe who would be called to preach the gospel.

What a shock it was to hear some two years later that her husband was not returning to his job and was stepping our by faith to preach. It was even more of a shock to hear that he had only one night booked in revivals. Yes, you read it right. One night.

For the next two years Sis. Poe held down a full time job in order to support the family. Times were extremely hard. There never was enough money. Bro. Poe was always gone it seemed. He left on Wednesday and returned on Monday. She got to see her new husband only ten hours a week for the first two years.

During this time a baby girl was born into this family. Emily Grace Poe was their precious angel. Yet, there was not enough money in the family to quit her job nor could they afford to pay day care for the baby. The only solution was to take the baby to work with her everyday. So Emily was packed up everyday in a bassinet and spent the entire day with her mother answering phones and doing her administrative duties.

Many times she wondered why God had called them to preach and then have to live so separated in order to do his will. They certainly didn’t want Emily to grow up not knowing her father’s voice so they recorded Bro. Poe making baby sounds and the words “I love you baby girl” and placed a tape recorder in the bed every night with her. Later, Bro. Poe decided to change his schedule and preach from Sunday to Tuesday night so he could spend at least two full days home with his family each week.

This has been the sacrifice of Sis. Poe. She keeps the house, raises their two children, home schools, takes the family to church and when Bro. Poe comes in from his revival travels she is there with open arms and a smile to get him ready to go out again.

One thing you will understand from talking with Sis. Poe is that although she has been through some extremely tough times and still lives an abnormal lifestyle because of Bro.Poe’s revival schedules, she is definitely a woman of faith. She has seen God do many miracles in her life. When you see her you don’t wonder if she believes this message. She is a picture of a woman of holiness and compassion. Although she does not travel with her husband to every revival, when she is in service with him, you will find her down in the altar praying with the people. Her heart is big and her love for God is deep.

Who put that tract in the phone booth? Sis. Poe doesn’t know, but one day in Heaven it will be revealed!
